Tai Chi

“Once you begin to move, the entire body must be light and limber. Each part of your body should be connected to every other part.”

Chang San-feng, Tai Chi Classics

Our Tai Chi

Translating to “Supreme Ultimate Fist,’ Tàijíquán 太極拳 is a martial art that is practiced slowly and gently. As such, it is excellent for people who are older, have injuries, or are looking for a gentle entry to getting into better physical shape. It is also excellent for martial artists who seek a deeper understanding of body mechanics, connectedness, balance, and awareness.

We practice individual Tai Chi postures, and a wide variety of Tai Chi forms (memorized sequences), including both the “long” (108) and “short” (24) forms. We work on Qìgōng 气功 exercises, which help to stretch, strengthen, and harmonize different parts of the body. We often use training tools such as bands or light weights to strengthen the muscles.

We practice “martial Tai Chi.” That is to say, though Tai Chi is a gentle and relaxing exercise, it is, at the end of the day, a combat system. As such, we also train movement applications, push hands, and weapons, including saber, straight sword, spear, and others.

Tai Chi classes are taught by Shifu Eliot Prisby.
